Using Constructed Wetlands to Remove Pathogenic Parasites and Fecal Coliforms from Wastewater in Dar es Salaam and Iringa, Tanzania

Wastewater treatment is a widely used health protection measure that can be applied to control the transmission of wastewater-related infectious diseases communities exposed wastewater. This study determined efficiency three full-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) in removing pathogenic parasites and fecal coliform (FC) bacteria from samples were collected CW systems located Dar es Salaam Iringa regions Tanzania. The modified Bailenger Ziehl-Neelsen stain techniques detect quantify parasites. membrane filtration method was FC bacteria. Data analysed using IBM SPSS version 20. Helminth (Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, Taenia spp.) eggs completely removed by two systems. In all systems, removal protozoa ranged 99.8% 100%. mean concentrations FCs effluents 5 6 log units/100 mL. Effluents met recommended parasitological quality requirements World Health Organization for safe reuse did not meet local discharge standards Tanzania Bureau Standards. Therefore, improvement CWs’ design, operation, maintenance are required efficient bacteria.
